It is estimated Tulum founding around 1200, as a commercial port, reaching its peak in 1400. Archaeological evidence confirms that market products here sea off the coast of Quintana Roo and Cozumel Island. Apparently, this city was independent, politically and commercially speaking, the domain of other Mayan centers of power or city-states, and remained so until in 1518 the first Spanish conquistadors arrived, Juan de Grijalva and his subjects. Because of the war, slavery and disease unknown to the natives, Tulum was abandoned, as happened with many other cities in the region and the Americas. The structures and pyramids that we admire today in Tulum were built during the Late Postclassic (1200-1550), although there are certain elements that are visible above, like the wake structure 1 and 59, which present early Classical styles (300 -600 AD). With the abandonment of Tulum as vibrant and dynamic city, came the decline and nature took care to hide it. It took us many centuries until it was rediscovered by the Western world, but the natives never forgot and made annually and continue to make ritual pilgrimages to bring gifts to the gods of antiquity. In April 1981 this area was declared a National Park in December 1993, Archaeological Monument Zone.
