San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec is a city and county seat namesake. Ranks as the second among the largest cities in the State of Oaxaca. It has a population of 101.810 inhabitants in the city and 155.766 inhabitants in the municipality, as the Second Census of Population and Housing INEGI 2010. Tuxtepec is the main urban center of the Basin Region Papaloapan, being possessed of a large farming, livestock, industrial and commercial nature, becoming a focal point for activities of the states of Oaxaca, Veracruz and Puebla.
The name comes from the Nahuatl Tochtepecan Tuxtepec, which means "rabbit on the hill" as it is composed of the voices tochtli, "rabbit," tepetl, "hill" and the completion c "in", which puts the previous translation into Spanish, so it's not right to appoint Tōchtépetl, "Hill of the rabbits," given that this version only gives us assume the place, but not the location of the population. After the conquest of Mexico was adapted into Spanish with the term Tustepeque form, which eventually would become the current Tuxtepec.
It is located in the region of upstate Papaloapam at coordinates 96 º 08 'west longitude and 18 º 05' north latitude, at a height of 20 m. bounded on the north with the state of Veracruz and the municipality of San Miguel Mazaltepec south with the municipalities of Santiago Jocotepec and Loma Bonita to the west with the municipalities of Santa Maria Jacatepec, San Lucas and San Jose Ojitlán Chiltepec and east with town of Loma Bonita.
Within the area of the municipality, the development of this economic activity has not been fully exploited, despite the many existing natural beauty. Tourism has been limited to visits to industries and commercial centers.
Among the promotional activities are the Fiestas de Mayo, where the fair takes place in the city, where year after year with participation of artists national and international fame, being a show also for the dissemination of its products, such as the livestock show and beer.
