Xinantécatl Park Nevado de Toluca
The area where this volcano was declared a national park in 1937. Its main attractionis the Xinantécatl or Nevado de Toluca, an extinct volcano of 4.558 meters above thesea level. The vegetation consists of examples of cool climate varieties of coniferssuch as pines, cedars and firs ocotes. In the higher parts of tundra vegetation is tozacatonales and a rich variety of thistles (Cnicus benedictus L). The fauna consists mainly of small rodents, reptiles, deer and eagles.
The volcano has a 1.5 kilometer (0.93 mile) wide caldera at the summit that is open to the west. The highest peak, 4,680 meters (15,354 ft) Pico del Fraile (Friar Pico) is on the south side of the crater and the second highest, 4,640 meters (15,223 ft) Pico del Aguila (Eagle Peak), is in the north. There are two crater lakes on the floor of thebasin to about 4,200 meters (13,800 feet), the largest lake in the Sun (Sun Lake) andthe smaller but deeper, Moon Lake (Lake of the Moon). One way is with the boiler to the lakes, so this may be the most accessible of Mexico's most important peak.
