Totolapa means "River of Birds".

The name San Miguel was given the Augustinian friars who evangelized the Indians.The word derives from the Nahuatl word Totolapan totolin which means chicken, turkey, an which means bird, and bread that is water together means. "In the river of birds" or "river or water birds."

El municipio de Tlalchapa forma parte de la región Tierra Caliente, situada al noroeste de Chilpancingo, a una altura de 420 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Localizado en los paralelos 18°16’ y 18°34’ de latitud norte y 100°16’ y 100°38’ de longitud oeste respecto del meridiano de Greenwich. Colinda al norte con el estado de México; al sur con Tlapehuala; al este con Arcelia y el estado de México; al oeste con Cutzamala de Pinzón y Pungarabato.
