BACKGROUND
Chinkultic in Maya means "Well Stacked" and its timing is known from studies on the pottery recovered in a section of the site. Its flowering period is located in the Classic Maya was first mentioned by the German scholar Eduard Seler, when he made a site visit in the late nineteenth century.
A 62 km Committee, on a series of limestone hills and through the presence of three major water reservoirs, the Cenote Azul and gaps Chanujabab and Tepancuapan-, stand the four main units that make up the Mayan site, where Aquatic deities worshiped and plots and is one of the best examples of a combination of Mayan architecture with landscape. Chinkultic in Maya means Stepped Well.
The first observations have been identified during the Early Classic (100 BC to 200 AD) and its height falls during the late classic period (600-900 AD). The chronology is known from studies on their pottery recovered in a section of the site. Its flowering period is located in the Classic Maya. Acropolis that stands out the crown a hill and consists of five structures: three small temples above the main temple of staggered five bodies and a base on the edge of the cenote where the offerings were thrown.
Chinkultic also has a ball game with sculptures associated. Archaeological interest, the site added its spectacular location overlooking the lake area and wide plains comiteco. Also outstanding is the group B consists of a large plaza that serves as a stage, a sunken space with its small central structure, three pyramids and the back bleachers on three sides, the group C where the ball game, and Group D which stands the building known as 20 slabs platform rectangular blocks whose blocks are the largest known Mayan archeology. The residential area consists of approximately 200 large and small mounds, grouped around 6 main sets, including the area of the Acropolis called Group A, the quadrangle of Group B and Group C, with the Ball Game and the Great platform.
What characterizes the architecture is the use of flat terrain combined with the slopes of the hills to the settlement of the ceremonial centers, this was done by conditioning the field terraces and retaining walls. The set is attached to the small hills that run past the first lake system through leveling, fillers and coatings that make them part of the architecture. The ball game has modeled stucco decoration in the late moments shows the combination of a coffin topped by a thick molding. It is also important the use of perfectly carved stone coating on its outer face. The ball game combines stands, beams and bases of stelae, center, and sides of the quadrangle stands a large group of stelae, mostly related to sun worship and water, and were the main reasons Chinkultic religious . The worship of water is inherent in a lake region.
Hence the site of the Acropolis at the edge of a deep sinkhole with standing water where they found remains of bones and evidence of human sacrifice, a lot of fragmented pottery and boxes made of four slabs which were placed offerings dedicated to that item. Sun worship can be seen by the large number of fragments of urns and braziers with designs allusive appeared everywhere, and large urns that show characters dressed in the attributes of the sun that shines and travels the world of the dead. In the wakes are also individuals wearing the same symbols: half blinder wound on the forehead, touched on a dead deer and jaguar skins alluding to the night, the jaguar is the animal that carries the sun in its journey through underworld, and so forth.
The game ball is attached to a hill which covered front terrace and quarry, with a small square where distributed a series of small platforms. Along the same hill you get the group B, with a huge mole mounted on the platform of the slabs, structure should consist of five bodies. In the eastern corner shows the quality in the management of stone cut together to form assemblies. Following the tour, shows the structure 19 with a kind of seat or throne at the top center. The view from here is splendid: the lagoon Chunjab, the beginning of the channels that convey part of the chain of lakes and a large segment of the archaeological complex, the front are two small altars monolithic. In the distance looms the pyramid higher in group A, consisting of a square and a square low-high, built on terraces formed by the piling up of huge stones. The writer and poet Enrique Juan Palacios visited Chinkultic in 1926 to corroborate the findings of Blom and wrote: "Hard to find a similarly poetic and evocative site. The Loneliness of course, the divine mirage lakes, islands with high cliffs where herons come to swoop down, the banks saturated dream, thick forests ... Mysterious atmosphere! The life of the remote past, so rich in palpitations, would seem to suddenly wake up ... "
