becán archelogic, maya site, campeche

Becán is a Mayan archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Campeche. It is characterized by being surrounded by a moat, unique in the Maya area, which some researchers bears witness to a continual war between this and other cities in the region, and for others it represents a clear spatial division of social classes, beinginterior area where buildings rise of monumental architecture, reserved for the elite.Becán access was possible for seven innings, three north, one to the west, two south and east, the latter being the current access to the site. Outside the area surrounded by the moat there is a lot of smaller buildings that served as housing, barns, shrines, agricultural terraces, etc., for the bulk of the population which sustained the ruling dynasty of Becán.

The site is classified by academic researchers as a Regional Capital on one of the most important architectural areas of the state of Campeche in the region including Rio Bec.

Site History

The evidence of human occupation dating back to Becán 600 BC, but its period of greatest prosperity was between 600 and 1000 AD, when the city took on a role of regional capital, focusing on her assets and services for a number of settlements due to its strategic location (almost in the middle of the base of the Yucatan Peninsula.)He was later slowly decreasing population to its total disappearance, about the year 1450 of the present day.

Its name, which in Mayan language means "Ravine or canyon formed by water," says clearly the most striking feature of the site: a moat surrounding the main architectural buildings covered by the bulkier and elevated site. This construction shows that access to the monumental area was restricted to certain social group and probably the population had access to the site only on holidays. Outside the area surrounded by the moat there is a lot of smaller buildings that served as housing, barns, shrines, agricultural terraces, etc. for the bulk of the population which sustained the ruling dynasty of Becán.
