Huautla de Jimenez is a municipality in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The name comes from the Nahuatl Huautla "cuiticaname - Huautla," which means "place of eagles." The city is called "tile" (also Eagle's Nest) in the Mazatec language. "Jimenez" was introduced in honor of General Mariano Jiménez, who was the first governor of Oaxaca in 1884 and the first officer to arrive at Mazteca land. He founded the town of Huautla de Jimenez, now seat of the county.
The city's origin is unknown, but the documents show that tribute was the largest city in the Mazatec region during the Late Postclassic period, when the people paid tribute to the Aztec empire.
