The town was founded in 1792, called the head town, the word comes from the Nahuatl Azoyu, meaning "Place where the water turns to mud." It is possible that this name has been given due to the existence of "Eye Water" or "spring" water or turbidZarca.
This town belongs to the Costa Chica region of Guerrero state. The municipal seatis located 262 km from state capital to 16 º 45 'north latitude and 98 º 36' west longitude from Greenwich.

Azoyu is known for being the site from which two important colonial codices that allow the knowledge of the history of the region Tlapaneca (otomangueanasLanguages) at the time. These codices are named I and II Azoyu
