Santa Clara del Cobre is a town located in the center of the state of Michoacan,Mexico, Patzcuaro 18 km and 79 km from the state capital of Morelia. Although the official name of the municipality is Salvador Escalante, and the city is often markedas "Villa Escalante" or "Salvador Escalante" on maps, both entities are variously called Santa Clara del Cobre. The city is part of the region of Patzcuaro, Michoacan,and ethnically dominated by the people P'urhépecha. These people have beenworking with copper since pre and led to the domination of these people in the craft ofcopper during the colonial period (1,519 to 1821) until well into the 19th century.Economic reverses led to near-disappearance industry here until the efforts in the years 1940 and 1970 did the work of the city back to prominence.
