The municipality of Carmen is located southwest of the state of Campeche, bounded on the north by the Gulf of Mexico and the municipality of Champoton, south to the state of Tabasco and the Republic of Guatemala, on the east by the municipalities and Candelaria Escárcega the west by the municipality of Palizada. It is located between parallels 17 ° 52 'and 19 ° 01' north latitude and meridians 90 ° 29 'and 92 ° 28' west of Greenwich.
The town takes its name from July 16, 1718, day of the Lady of Carmen, when the pirates were defeated and expelled from the island.
Three kinds of weather prevailing in the region: warm and humid with abundant rainfall in summer, which covers 24.1% of the municipal area, particularly south and west of the town, where it borders with beatings and the state of Tabasco hot humid with rains in summer and high humidity, typical of 43.6% of municipal territory, and warm-humid with rains in summer relative humidity, which covers 32.3% of municipal area.
El Carmen is one of the municipalities in which it is divided the Mexican state of Campeche, its county seat is Ciudad del Carmen.
Its main towns are Ciudad del Carmen, Isla Aguada, Sabancuy, March Eighteen, Aguacatal, Atasta and Nuevo Progreso.
Ciudad del Carmen was discovered in 1518 and is located in the western part of the Isla del Carmen, also known as Tris Island and Isla Rica, in the Lagoon of Terms, which is the largest in the state.
