in Zipolite is located Piña Palmera

On the coast of Oaxaca, in Zipolite is located Piña Palmera, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to rehabilitating people with all types of disabilities regardless of age, ethnicity or economic status. "We want to work and to respect our rights, but not based on pity. There is a Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and in the framework of this convention, we want to treat us," said Ana Maria Canseco, a member of Piña Palmera.

Volunteers support every day in the area. The tasks are washing, feeding, but also to walk out with them for example. When started, this work may seem very strong. But one gets used to it and very beautiful relationships with youth. Each of them reacts differently, for example one can communicate more easily through gestures or looks, while others are completely passive. But even the least informed needs the same love, the very presence, even if the activities are different for everyone. On the street, do not be ashamed. Zipolite community is very familiar to young people, and people smile and say hello when we pass to children. Moreover, the activity is sometimes a little monotonous for the child. The volunteer must be active and creative. Sometimes a funny idea for children and the workers themselves.

Special Care Area

The special care area, we attend to 4 young people with different severe disabilities like cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism. Most of them came to our Center over ten years and all of them require medical attention and treatment.
The aim of the special care area is to provide basic care - hygiene, food - and young doctors, in addition to providing an opportunity for rehabilitation and integration in central Piña Palmera and community.
Here people work 8, 4 day, 2 night and 2 jokers (cover holidays and weekends), three in the night taking turns and requires the support of volunteers. The workers are not professionals, are parents and mothers in the area trained by Piña Palmera.
