Ixtlan's name is of "Nahuatl", composed by the words "Itz-ittztell" meaningobsidian, and "tlan" which means areas where there is, Ixtlan word means "place where abundant obsidian" or also "place of obsidian knife."
The town of Ixtlan del Rio is located in the southwestern state of Nayarit, in the coordinates 20 º 56 'north latitude and 104 º 10' west longitude. The average height is 1.500 meters. It limits the north with the municipalities of La Yesca andJala on the south by the Amatlán Canas and the state of Jalisco, Jalisco on the east and west with the municipality of Ahuacatlán
