Commitan (formally: Comitan of Belisario Dominguez [1]) is the fourth largest city in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is the seat of government of the municipality of the same name.
Located on the east-central Chiapas, near the border with Guatemala at 16 ° 15'N 92 ° 08'W / 16.25 ° N, 92.13 ° W / 16.25, -92.13. In the 2005 census, the population was 83,571 people. The original name given by the local Maya peoples is Balun Canan (Nine stars "). It was later changed to Commitan of the Flowers and, in 1915, Comitan after Dr. Belisario Domínguez, who gave a speech memorable in Congress against the dictator Victoriano Huerta was assassinated.
Commitan is also a popular tourist destination, especially for Mexicans, but also some foreign visitors can be seen. The city is one of the most pleasant and beautiful streets of Mexico, with colonial architecture, narrow streets, and clean. The climate is cool most of the year and can be very cold from October to March. The town square is active almost every night, with live music, or some kind of presentation / play (although they often seem to be something evangelicals). The main road (currently under repair) within and outside the city is full of flowers and memorials to many of the states of Mexico.
