Palenque Mayan ruins

Palenque is a Mayan city, located in what is now the Mexican state of Chiapas, near the Usumacinta River. One of the most impressive sites of this culture. Compared to other Mayan cities, is considered of medium size: less than Tikal or Copán, noted for its architectural heritage and sculptural.

The open area up to 2005 covers 2.5 km ², but it is estimated that only explored less than 10% of the total area reached the city, staying more than a thousand structures still covered by forest. In 1981, Palenque was designated "Protected Area." The UNESCO declared World Heritage Site in 1987.
